Modeling Lexical Decision as Ordinary Retrieval

چکیده
We present an ACT-R model of signal-to-respond lexical decision. This model is based on a mental lexicon constructed from a complete list of English four-letter words with associated word frequencies. A number of (signal-to-respond) lexical decision phenomena are explained by the model, without having to rely on mechanisms specific to lexical decision. Besides explaining these phenomena, the model also illustrates the necessity of a competitive latency mechanism. According to this mechanism, the time necessary for retrieving an element from declarative memory is a function of the activation of all other elements in declarative memory. We argue that the data presented here can only be explained using a competitive latency

Comparative Study of Degree of Bilingualism in Lexical Retrieval and Language Learning Strategies
This study compares lexical retrieval amongst monolinguals and intermediate bilinguals and advanced bilinguals. It also investigates the possible effects of their language learning strategies on their respective lexical retrieval advantage. The study used a mixed methods design and the groups consisted of 20 Persian near-monolinguals, 20 Persian-English intermediate level bilinguals, and 20 Per...
متن کاملBayesian Modeling of Memory and Perception
I present a framework for modeling memory, retrieval, perception, and their interactions. The models are inspired by Bayesian induction to determine optimal decisions, in the face of a memory system with inherently noisy storage and retrieval. The starting point for this work was the Retrieving Effectively from Memory (REM) model for episodic recognition (Shiffrin & Steyvers, 1997). The general...
متن کاملModeling memory and perception
I present a framework for modeling memory, retrieval, perception, and their interactions. Recent versions of the models were inspired by Bayesian induction: We chose models that make optimal decisions conditioned on a memory/perceptual system with inherently noisy storage and retrieval. The resultant models are, fortunately, largely consistent with my models dating back to the 1960s, and are th...
متن کاملBoosting Passage Retrieval through Reuse in Question Answering
Question Answering (QA) is an emerging important field in Information Retrieval. In a QA system the archive of previous questions asked from the system makes a collection full of useful factual nuggets. This paper makes an initial attempt to investigate the reuse of facts contained in the archive of previous questions to help and gain performance in answering future related factoid questions. I...
متن کاملAdelman , J . S . , & Brown , G . D . A . Modeling lexical decision :
What is the root cause of word frequency effects on lexical decision times? Murray and Forster (2004) argued that such effects are linear in rank frequency, consistent with a serial search model of lexical access. This paper (i) describes a method of testing models of such effects that takes into account the possibility of parametric overfitting; (ii) illustrates the effect of corpus choice on ...
